Historian Dick Stewart will share an overview of the origins of the Electoral College at the Constitutional Convention of 1787, followed by a discussion of its impact on selected elections including its decisive role in the election of "minority presidents" in 2000 (George W. Bush) and 2016 (Donald Trump). Does the Electoral College now serve as the basis for a political strategy of winning only those states that can provide an electoral majority without a popular majority?

Michael Beschloss serves as the NBC Presidential Historian and contributes to the PBS NewsHour. Among his ten published books are titles such as Presidents of War, Presidential Courage, The Conquerors, Taking Charge, and Reaching for Glory. In 2005, he received an Emmy for his involvement in creating and hosting the Discovery Channel's Decisions that Shook the World.
