Discovery & Enrichment Series: The Evolving Determination of Death with Dr. Delmonico

Organ recovery for transplantation from a deceased patient has shifted the scientific focus on determining death to brain function, specifically the ability to maintain consciousness and breathe independently. The permanent absence of blood circulation to the brain allows for the declaration of death. However, this standard medical practice is facing challenges from certain conflicted religious groups. Dr. Delmonico will discuss the controversy and offer a scientific and ethical resolution.

Dr. Francis Delmonico is the Emeritus Director of Renal Transplantation at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Registration is encouraged.
